Ruminations and Cows

04.27.2015 by Adrian Hindes // Leave a Comment

And so it begins.

Okay so first off, ruminations. More specifically, the word ‘ruminations’. If you study psychology you might be a bit a concerned because it’s academic definition is ” the compulsively focused attention on the symptoms of one’s distress, and on its possible causes and consequences, as opposed to its solutions” (Thanks Wikipedia).
Now that isn’t the nicest thing, obviously. But I chose ruminations for its other meaning, which I think is a bit nicer,
“to think carefully and deeply about something”(Thanks Merriam-Webster).
Visually this brings to mind a cow chewing on cud, with a very contemplative look on their face. Well actually that’s the other meaning of ruminating, which is quite apt. But anyway I think this whole ruminating business is what I’m gonna aim for with this blog. The thinking, I mean, not existential crisis or chewing grass.
Not quite Socrates, but close enough.
Not quite Socrates, but close enough.
These days people tend to skim read everything, news, gossip, whatever. Oh the Mars rover found liquid water. Yeah, that’s interesting. *And then tap to the next thing*. I’ll admit, I do this too. It’s hard to dedicate minutes rather than seconds on individual ideas. But I suppose I’ll leave the topic of ‘information overload’ for another time.
So instead of just giving something a half-hearted ‘hmph’ of approval, I’m hoping to write about things that come to my attention, particularly in science, and just explore the topic. Partially for my own interest, but also if anyone else is curious. Which I hope they are. If you’re paying attention, there are lots of interesting things around. Like, everywhere, all the time. At school even. Yeah that sounds a bit weird, but sometimes there are interesting ideas and concepts hidden behind the soul crushing drag of learning.
So I’ll be listening out in class and during the day for things to ‘ruminate’ on. Knowledge to chew on. Oh and, people that know how slow I eat should find this whole thing hilarious.
